The James River volleyball team had a light schedule in the past week but that will change in a hurry. River will play three matches in four days next week, all against Three Rivers District opponents.
On Monday the girls will play at Radford, the 2025 Class 2 state champ. Then, a day later, they host Martinsville. After a day off Wednesday they return to the court on Thursday, October 8, to take on arch-rival Glenvar. The Highlanders are the only district team to beat River thus far.
The Knights were 9-2 overall prior to a Tuesday match at Carroll County that was too late for press deadlines. Last week they had just one match, a three-set win at Floyd County by scores of 25-23, 25-8 and 25-18.
“We started out slow, however we came alive in the second set,” said coach Linsey Firebaugh. “We served tough and kept them out of system and made them make a lot of errors.
Kinley Millman had a dozen kills for the Knights and Ashby Wilkes had nine. Ayden Jennings had 11 assists and 11 digs. Ayden recently recorded the 1,000th assist of her high school career in a September 17 win over Franklin County in Springwood.
