Sara Bane scored three goals to lead the LB girls to a 5-0 soccer win over county rival James River in Daleville last week. The Cavs swept the season series without giving up a goal, having won the first game in Springwood by a 2-0 count.

“The Cavaliers were too much for the Knights, taking charge of the game early and winning decisively,” said River coach Bill Smith. “Despite the one-sided score, the match was intense from start to finish.”

Bane started the scoring with two goals in the opening 20 minutes of play.  The score was 3-0 at the break after a goal from Hallie Catron.

Autumn Bonhotel scored for LB just after the midpoint of the second half and Bane finished the scoring with 11 minutes remaining. James River goal keeper Colleen Peery made 17 saves on the evening while, for LB,  Alex Heck made five saves in the first half and Carleigh Booth made two saves in the second half.

Botetourt also shut out Rockbridge on Friday at home, 8-0, to remain unbeaten after eight games. Sara Bane had her second hat trick of the week with three more goals and an assist. Hannah Bane had a goal and an assist and Heather Finley, Hannah Leonard, Mary-Randall Plunkett and McKenzie Tuck each scored a goal.

The Cavs were scheduled to play at Staunton River on Tuesday, and Friday they’ll host Northside.

James River fired back with a 9-0 win at Floyd County on Thursday. The Knights overpowered the Buffaloes from start to final whistle. Kaitlyn McClung, Emma Butler, and Olivia Baker each scored two goals while Kendra Peery, Blair Grim, and Emily Bryan had one each. Peery had a pretty easy match in goal as she was credited with a shutout without making a save.

River was rained out of a Monday match at Auburn and that has been rescheduled for May 15. The Knights will host Amherst tonight and Giles is here on Thursday, both starting at 5:30 p.m.
