Young people were taught their alphabet, needlework skills and patience by doing samplers. This one was hand embroidered on linen by Rebecca E. W. Mastin in the 1800s. She was the daughter of Mary R. Winston, who married Sir Frederick Argyle of Scotland. She has signed the piece along the bottom. It is in the Botetourt County History Museum, which is free and open everyday.
