The Daleville-Fincastle Lions Club presented the annual Lion of the Year award to Carole Smith at the monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Smith has been a Lion since August 2017 and is a charter member of the Daleville-Fincastle Lions Club. She served as president of the club for the Lions Year 2018-2019 and is currently serving as the publicity chair.

Smith received the State Achievement Award for Outstanding Activities for the Lions year 2018-2019. She has also received the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, which is the highest award that a Lion can receive.

The International Lions motto is “We Serve” and since joining Lions, Smith’s emphasis has been on providing service to the local community.

For this current Lions year, she has been the Lions Club coordinator for the vision screening project for Botetourt County Public Schools, private schools, day care centers and home-schooled children. She also has been very active in volunteering for the Virginia Department of Health vaccine clinics. She also served as the club coordinator for the Botetourt County of Commerce Tinsel Trail Celebration.

Some of the other service projects that Smith has taken part in as a Lion are: Read Across America Program, volunteering at elementary schools to aid students, Lions Camp Too Sweet (a camp for diabetic children), Bland Music Contest, Junior Diabetes Research Foundation Walk and Troutville Volunteer Fire Department Golf Tournament.
