The Lord Botetourt volleyball team will be in Roanoke Thursday for a match with Class 5 Patrick Henry. It will be a rematch of last week’s season opener, won by LB in four sets in Daleville.
Ava Stephens had 17 kills in last week’s win over the Patriots. After Botetourt won the first set, 25-15, Patrick Henry squeaked by in the second, 29-27. The Cavs then put it away by winning 25-17 and 25-16.
It’s been a busy opening week for LB. They were in Christiansburg last Thursday to take on the Blue Demons, who were Class 3 state runners-up last year and had eliminated LB in the region tournament. This was another barn burner, going five sets before it was decided.
Botetourt won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-13, but the Demons battled back to win the next three in a row, including a 26-24 win in the third set that prevented Botetourt from sweeping. With new life, Christiansburg took the fourth set, 25-19, then won the fifth and deciding set to 15, 15-7, to stun the visitors in the marathon match.
Stephens had 12 kills and seven blocks in this one. Addalyn Underwood had 37 digs and four aces and Lily Crenshaw contributed 33 digs.
On Monday of this week the Cavs were back on the hardwood to host Tunstall and lost in four. LB won the first set by two points, 25-23, then lost the second by two, 26-24. The visiting Trojans then turned it up a notch to win the last two, 25-19 and 25-18.
Stephens had five blocks against Tunstall to go with nine kills. Skyla Corkin had eight kills and two blocks and Olivia Bergsten had 20 digs.
The Cavaliers will return the trip to Tunstall next Tuesday, September 8.
