The James River volleyball team opened the season with two wins last week and will play the same two opponents this week, only at opposite locations.
River opened the season on August 25 with a home match against Staunton River and won in four sets, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-21. Ashby Wilkes led the team with 22 kills and also had eight digs. Kendall Childs had 19 assists and seven digs, Auden Jennings had 16 assists, 11 digs and three aces and Kinley Millman contributed nine kills.
“Good competition for the first match,” said River coach Linsey Firebaugh. “Staunton River had a lot of athletes, we were just able to serve aggressively and keep them out of system. We had 14 aces as a team and attacked aggressively.”
Last Friday the girls were at Parry McCluer and won in three, 25-7, 25-17 and 24-10. Wilkes had a dozen kills.
“Our serving and ball control are what made us dominate this match,” said Firebaugh. “Parry McCluer struggled to return the ball from our serving and attacks.”
The Knights were scheduled to return the trip to Staunton River on Tuesday of this week but results were too late for publication. Parry McCluer will come to Springwood on Thursday and next Tuesday, September 8, the Knights will host Radford in their Three Rivers District opener.
