Free lunch, music, school supplies Saturday at Solomon’s Mission

Solomon’s Mission on Lowe Street in Buchanan will offer its free Second Saturday Lunch this Saturday, Aug. 8 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The meal will consist of hot dogs, baked beans, chips, bottled water and dessert. It will be “to go” or “dine in” (tables are social distanced).

Organizers are also excited to have a band from Yorktown called “Banned from Church” coming to play outside on the parking lot. The group plays a variety of old rock, gospel and originals.

Also, from 10 a.m. to noon, they will give out school supplies to children who are in the Botetourt school system, while supplies last. Children must be present to receive the supplies.

Virginia Presbyterian continues drive-in services

Due to the continued coronavirus epidemic, Virginia Presbyterian Church will continue to hold a drive-in worship service in the prayer garden, for the months of August and September. The service time is 9:30 a.m. at 918 Pico Road, Buchanan. The congregation invites anyone in the community to come and worship.

St. Mark’s UMC will offer ‘GriefShare’ online

Everyone experiences loss of loved ones through death. Sooner or later all will walk the journey of grief. A quote from Healing Hugs says, “I think the hardest part of losing someone isn’t saying goodbye, but rather learning how to live without them, always trying to fill the void.”

This year the isolation of dealing with the COVID pandemic just makes the loss seem worse. In order to find your way from mourning to healing and restoration you may find that sharing your journey with a small group of others going through the same thing can help. GriefShare is designed as a nondenominational program to help guide you through this season of grief with Biblical, Christian principles and lessons. The group is led by caring people who have experienced grief and have successfully rebuilt their lives.

This fall St. Mark’s United Methodist Church will offer GriefShare online. Plans are in place to give you access to the videos and workbooks. The group discussions will be offered on Zoom, beginning September 3 on Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. Call the church for more information at 992-3030. Registrations are required and can be found on line at www.stmarksmethodist.com. Once you have registered, someone will be in touch with more details about getting a workbook and accessing the videos.  If you have never used Zoom before, someone will help you.

Everyone is welcome to this 13-week small group, no matter how recently or long ago you experienced your loss.
