Botetourt voters will have the opportunity to pick nominees for the Democratic Party’s candidate to run for the Sixth District U.S. Congressional seat and the Republican Party’s candidate to run for the U.S. Senate during Tuesday’s primary elections.

Voters will have to declare which primary they want to vote in— Democratic Party or Republican Party— when they go to the polls.

June 12 is also the deadline for candidates to qualify to run in the November General Election in all three of Botetourt’s incorporated towns.

Buchanan, Fincastle and Troutville will hold elections for town council and mayor this fall.

Botetourt voters will also participate in a special election in November when they will fill the unexpired term of former Commonwealth’s Attorney Joel Branscom. Candidates wanting to qualify to run for Commonwealth’s Attorney have until August 17 to qualify. The Botetourt County Committee of the Republican Party is holding a mass meeting June 19 to select a party candidate to run for the seat.

As of Tuesday morning, both Troutville and Fincastle had one candidate qualified to be on the ballot for mayor— both incumbents. Troutville Mayor W. David Horton is running again and Fincastle Mayor Mary Bess Smith will be on the ballot again.

No one had filed to run for Mayor of Buchanan so far.

Troutville had four candidates qualify to be on the ballot for the three council seats up for election— H. John Cook Jr., Patricia M. Shaver, Granville E. Grant and Spurgeon O. Vaughan Jr. are running for those seats.

So far, George W. Sydnor Jr. is the only candidate for council in Fincastle, while Buchanan had two candidates qualify for the four council seats— incumbents James “Jamie” Manspile and Jane H. Kneisley.

There are four candidates on the Democratic Party’s ballot for the nomination to run for the Sixth District Congressional seat against Republican Ben Cline.

Sergio A. Coppola II, Jennifer Lynn Lewis, Peter J. Volosin and Charlotte Ann Moore are vying for that nomination.

There are three candidates running for the Republican Party nomination to run for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Tim Kaine, who is unopposed for the Democratic Party nomination.

Nick Freitas,  E.W. Jackson and Corey Stewart are the Republican hopefuls.

Botetourt County polling places will be open normal election hours on Tuesday, from 6 a.m.-7 p.m.
