Tim Fulton is stepping down as athletic director at Lord Botetourt High School after four years on the job. Fulton will leave his post at the end of the month to take a similar position at Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy.
“You could say I’m retiring from public education,” said Fulton. “I’m 60 years old now and I saw this as a good opportunity.”
Fulton is eligible for retirement after 33 years in public schools. Although Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy is now a member of the Virginia High School League the Ospreys are a private school located off Hendricks Store Road in Moneta. The academy has between 350 and 400 students from pre-school through 12th grade.
As far as sports, SMLCA fields teams in most sports, including football, volleyball and golf in the fall. The Ospreys have wrestling and basketball for boys and girls in the winter, and in the spring the school has baseball, softball, tennis, track and boys’ and girls’ soccer. They compete in the Dogwood District with Altavista, Appomattox County, Chatham, Dan River, Galileo Magnet, Gretna, Nelson County and William Campbell.
Fulton leaves Lord Botetourt after four years, having succeeded Chuck Pound as athletic director beginning with the 2022 fall season. He’s been on board for the hiring of a new football coach, a boys’ soccer coach, two boys’ basketball coaches and new coaches for swimming, track and cross country.
“I’m very appreciative of the time I’ve had here at Lord Botetourt,” said Fulton. “This was a great opportunity for me and I feel like I’ve grown professionally and been a part of the community. I appreciate the support we’ve had from the school, the administration and the Botetourt community.”
Tim isn’t heading for the exit just yet. This is a busy time of year for the athletic department and he wants to make sure his successor isn’t overwhelmed when the new hire is made.
“When I came here Chuck Pound had everything set up for me, and I really appreciated that,” he said. “For the next couple weeks I’m going to do everything I can to make sure the transition goes as smoothly as possible.”
