Dr. James W. “Jim” Gilliland, 78, of Daleville, passed away Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Friendship Assisted Living following a brief illness.

Jim was born in Honolulu, Hawaii August 28, 1944 and lived in Daleville since 1970. He was the son of the late Dr. James W. and Genevieve McVeigh Gilliland.

Jim was a Public Health Dentist for The Commonwealth of Virginia for 40 years, retiring in 2009. He was graduated from Northeast Louisiana State University (University of Louisiana, Monroe) and received his Doctor in Dentistry from St. Louis University.  Jim was a lifetime member of Troutville Rescue Squad, was a member of Troutville Lions Club, and the American Dental Association.  He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting, and was a fan of NASCAR.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Johnston Gilliland, in 2018.  He is survived by his sons: Jay (Heather) Gilliland of Fincastle and Jamey (Seana) Gilliland of Ashburn, Va.; daughter, Barbara (Stephen) Anderson of Cloverdale; grandchildren: Lauren (John) Brock, Andrew (Shelby) Sarver, Bella Gilliland, Ainsley Anderson, and Mason Gilliland; one sister, Gaye Bright of Fort Worth, Texas; and long-time friends, Joe and Karen Turner of Salem.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be 2 p.m. Monday, May 22 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road, Daleville with Pastor Danny Quirin and Pastor Mike Hogan officiating.  Burial will be in Mill Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 2-5 p.m. Sunday.
