Clayton “Chipper” McCulloch Harper, of Buchanan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at his home.

He was born on December 31, 1944 in Buchanan to the late Clayton M. and Juanita Falls Harper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Armalee Hodges, Calvin, Arnold, and Winifred Harper, and Phoebe Clark.

Chipper in survived by his dearly loved family including his beloved wife of 45 years, Cindy T. Harper; several children of whom he was so proud, Dustin Harper (Kristen) of Roanoke and Aimee Dunn (Brian) of Salem. In addition to these two children, he was known as Papaw by his adored grandchildren, Jaxon and Macie Dunn of Salem and Henry Harper of Roanoke. Survivors also include John, Gerald, and Michelle of Roanoke; special nieces, Jan Thompson of Hardy and Debbie Benois of Roanoke.

He was affectionately known as “Chipper” because of his love of laughter and his mischievous personality. He enjoyed flea marketing, hunting, fishing, and spending countless hours with his grandchildren. Chipper loved his beach vacations with his children and grandchildren, as well as just sitting on his front porch watching the birds and squirrels. He retired from V.P.S. after driving a tractor-trailer for over 48 years with an accident-free record. He enjoyed seeing the country as he traveled to many states over the many years of driving.

Visitation with family and friends was held at Botetourt Funeral Home in Buchanan on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 6 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Marina Gopadze. Condolences may be made at www.botetourtfuneralhome.com or 540-254-3000.
