Lord Botetourt senior Ashton Harper shot a two-under-par 69 to win medalist honors and lead the Cavaliers to the team championship at the Blue Ridge District golf tournament Monday.

The Cavaliers, who finished second to Franklin County during the regular season, beat the Eagles by 14 strokes at Blue Hills Monday. Botetourt shot a team score of 309  to 323 for Franklin County. William Byrd was third at 330, followed by Northside at 363 and Staunton River at 428. William Fleming did not field a full team.

“I thought we played well,” said LB coach Todd Smith. “Hopefully, we can carry that over into next week.”

Harper, a senior who will play at Virginia Tech next year, won individual honors by five strokes as Franklin County’s Sam Fansler was second with a 74, followed by Clayton Gilmore of Byrd at 75. Harper had eight birdies for his round. Also scoring for LB were Kasey Davis with a 79, Hunter Duncan at 80, and Xavier Shelton at 81. Tyler Meade had an 86, and Cadyn Bowles carded 88.

Next up for the Cavaliers is the Region 3D tournament at Draper Valley next Tuesday, September 27, in Pulaski County. The top two teams and three individuals not on those teams will advance to the state tournament.
