The James River golfers shot a 315 to finish fourth in Monday’s Class 2 state golf tournament at the Hobbs Hole Golf Tournament in Tappahannock, Va. Graham High School won the state championship with a score of 307.
River’s team score was just a stroke behind third place Windsor, who came in at 314. Poquoson High was second at 311. The Knights scored better than Three Rivers District champion Floyd County as well as Gate City, Fort Defiance and Strasburg.
Senior Mason Gilliland led the Knights with a two under par 69, earning all-state honors. Mason was in a four-way tie for medalist after 18 holes, and the four golfers went to a sudden death playoff to determine the state champion. All four replayed the 18th hole and Mason tied for second with Ryland Syzmanski of Windsor winning the playoff.
Also scoring for the Knights were Landon Bolling with a three over par 74, Braden Persinger at 82 and Trenton Taylor and Tucker Hall tied for the fourth scoring position with 90 each.
The Class 3 tournament was scheduled for Tuesday at the Cutalong course at the Tributer Resort in Mineral, Va., but results were too late for publication. Lord Botetourt’s Alisa Davidova was competing in the tournament as an individual. Look for results in next week’s Fincastle Herald sports section.
