The James River volleyball team will play host to Floyd County Thursday in a Three Rivers District match. The Knights are looking to bounce back after losses to Glenvar and Franklin County in the past week.
Last Thursday in Springwood the Knights hosted arch-rival Glenvar, a thorn in their side in recent years. Things didn’t go River’s way again as the Highlanders won in four sets, 25-16, 25-20 14-25 and 25-23.
“The Glenvar game was a tough one that could have gone either way,” said River coach Linsey Firebaugh. “We played well the last three sets. Unfortunately, some calls and plays did not go our way.”
On Monday of this week the girls were in Rocky Mount to take on Class 5 Franklin County, a school three classifications larger than Class 2 James River. Regardless, the Knights came out smoking and handily won the first set, 25-13. However, things went down hill from there as Franklin rallied to take the next three, and the match, 25-18, 25-7 and 25-18.
“We came out firing,” said Firebaugh. “We kept Franklin out of system and they were unable to handle our serves. As the game went on we could not keep up with their big hitters. They got us out of system and we were unable to put the ball away.”
The non-district loss dropped River to 10-6 overall. The Knights are 4-4 in district matches.
