The Lord Botetourt girls were loading up the bus to head to Abingdon as the paper went to press this week to compete in the Region 3D basketball tournament. Abingdon got to host because the Falcons are the fourth seed in the tournament while LB is fifth.

The 10-team tournament opened Monday with Christiansburg and Magna Vista advancing to trim the field to eight. Tuesday’s winners will advance to the semifinals, if Botetourt won Tuesday the Cavs would play the winner of a quarterfinal game between top-seeded Cave Spring and Christiansburg on Thursday.

The LB girls came into the tournament at 5-3 after dropping their last two regular season games. On Wednesday in Roanoke, William Fleming topped LB, 54-49. The Cavaliers led for most of the game before the Colonels finished strong to take the win. Grace Taylor scored 20 points and Taylor Orange added 10 for LB.

“The difference in the game is that we gave up 28 offensive rebounds, which allowed William Fleming 27 more shots than we took,” said coach Renee Favaro. “Rebounding continues to be an Achilles heel for us. We are certainly undersized inside, but we have to do a better job boxing out and pursuing the rebounds this week if we want to keep our season going.”

On Friday at Franklin County the girls finished the regular season with a 46-44 loss to the Eagles.

Taylor scored 13 and Ally Spangler had 11.
