LB girls take 10th among 41 teams at Knights Crossing, River boys are eighth in race for smaller schools

Green Hill Park in Roanoke County was buzzing with action last Saturday when Cave Spring High School hosted the annual Knights Crossing event. The cross country extravaganza had many divisions as some of the top runners and teams on the East Coast converged on Roanoke County.

The Lord Botetourt teams competed in the Red Division, the best for varsity teams, and finished 10th among 41 teams. Dobyns Bennett High School of Tennessee was the team winner with 60 points, putting runners in second, eighth, 13th, 18th and 19th places. LB’s came in at 359 and the fastest Cavalier was Sydney Vokus in 15th place with a time of 19:39.7. The winning time was 17:13.5 by Kelsey Harrington of Virginia High. There were 334 runners in the girls Red race.

Also scoring for the LB girls were Lauren Duff in 61st, Gracie Barron in 81st, Sofia Hernandez at 103 and Katie Cross at 117.

LB was 22nd among 46 teams in the boys race, as Oakton High won with runners finished second, third and sixth among 396 competitors. LB’s best finish was Bryson Cook in 17:20.2 for 53rd place. The winning time was 15:31.6 by Carson Williams of Cardinal Gibbons High.

Other scorers for the Cavaliers were Tyler Meade, a freshman who finished 71st, Alex Hawkins at 123, Evan Poff at 138 and Evan Gates at 223.

James River ran in the “Black” Division, for smaller schools, and the River boys were eighth out of 21 teams. Union High was the team winner.

River’s top finisher was Cole Miller, who took 14th with a time of 17:45.2. The winning time was 16:09.2 by Daniel Connelly of Roanoke Catholic.

Also scoring for River were Camden Powell in 30th, Isaac Bell in 33rd, Sam Worsley in 80th and Nathan Etzler in 95th. There were 201 runners in the Black race.

River had just one girl competing, Abbagail Link. She finished 11th among 137 runners in the Black race with a time of 22:09.4, just over two minutes behind winner Zoe Belshan of Three Rivers District rival Floyd County.

This week River will compete in the Clash with the Titans at Hidden Valley on Saturday while the Cavaliers are idle.
