Ethan Steryous, Lord Botetourt’s number one boys’ tennis player, will be competing in the Virginia High School League Class 3 tournament this week at the Liberty University courts.
Steryous is representing Region 3D as the singles champion. He defeated Keaton Bartley of Hidden Valley in the region singles final in three sets on May 29. After losing the first set, 6-4, Ethan rallied to win the second, 6-4, then won a 10-7 tie-breaker in a thrilling third set to win the region championship.
Ethan will open state play Friday with a 9 a.m. semifinal match against Neel Dharni of Tabb High School. Thomas Lapp of Meridian and Gage Sturman of Western Albemarle are in the other semifinal. The state championship match is scheduled for Saturday morning, also at 9 a.m.
The Lord Botetourt team was eliminated from region play by Cave Spring, 6-0, on May 30. The Cavs had opened the tournament with a 5-4 win over Bassett.
“It was a great season for the Cavaliers, and there is plenty of reason for optimism moving forward with five of seven starters expected to return next year,” said coach Tim Wright.
