The Lord Botetourt girls have a big Blue Ridge District basketball game Friday as they travel to Roanoke to take on William Fleming. The Colonels have opened district play with two wins and they’re 10-3 overall coming into the week.

Botetourt is 1-1 in the district and 7-6 overall after defeating Eastern Montgomery in Daleville Monday night. The Cavaliers raced to a 67-28 win behind Maggie Hoover’s double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds. Natalee Bowling had 20 points, seven boards and four assists, and Addison Naff added 10 points.

“It was nice to bounce back after Friday’s tough ending and come out and not commit a single turnover in the first half,” said LB coach Renee Favaro.

Botetourt suffered their first district loss last Friday when the Cavaliers fell to Staunton River in Moneta, 50-34. The Cavaliers struggled in the first half with 17 turnovers but hung in the game, trailing by just three at the half and two after three quarters.

“Turnovers and offensive rebounds plagued us in the first minute of the fourth quarter, and we quickly gave up seven points,” said Favaro. “Unfortunately, we just could not recover from there.”

The Cavaliers also struggled from the free throw line, shooting just 37 percent for the game. Hoover and Bowling scored 31 of LB’s 34 points with Hoover scoring 21 and Bowling 10. Maggie had 11 rebounds and Bowling had seven.

Botetourt played three games last week. After opening the Blue Ridge District season with a 50-25 win over Franklin County in Daleville on Tuesday the girls were home again a night later and beat Liberty in a non-district game, 68-25. Botetourt led that one 57-7 after three quarters.

“Great team win,” said Favaro. “The girls played well. Four players in double figures.”

Hoover led the scoring again with 17 points on eight for 12 shooting with six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Naff added 16 points on six for eight shooting while Bowling added 13 points and Jaiden Dann had11. Layla McGavock had a solid game with eight points and four assists.

The girls have back-to-back games again next week when they play at Northside on Tuesday then host Salem on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
