When the Eagle Rock Ruritan Club met in August, members and guests were treated to a catered meal as a gift from the women of Mt. Bethel Church of the Brethren. They expressed their appreciation to the women for their generosity.
The program was given by Ruritan member Erin Slusser-Pease and two guests representing the Eagle Rock Elementary School PTA. Erin is the president of the PTA and her guests were Melissa Fleming, second grade teacher, and Jessica Davis, an instructional assistant working in a self-contained classroom with students who need more special attention. They reminded club members of many of the ways the PTA supports the educational programs and students at Eagle Rock. The PTA encourages many local businesses to give financial support to purchase supplies and equipment to enhance the students’ learning experiences. The PTA also has several fundraisers during the school year.
The Ruritans commend the PTA members for all their efforts in giving students many opportunities to enhance their educational experience that would not be possible without those efforts, adding that the community is fortunate that individuals volunteer their time to support the PTA in all of its activities which support the local elementary school.

In Community Service Committee reports, Vice-President Donna Vaughn acknowledged club member Audrey Clark’s gift of books for the Little Free Library located in front of the Community Center. The Little Free Library provides books for children and adults.
Citizenship and Patriotism Committee Chair Bill Critcher gave a report on the August 4 Republican Primary.
Environment Committee Chair Mark Ingram reported that he is investigating some possibilities for improving the Nature Trail at Eagle Rock Elementary School.
The Social Development Committee reminded members of the Senior Social offered quarterly by the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Department.
The Finance Committee announced the fish fry fundraiser to be held on Saturday, October 17 at the Community Center. Tickets may be purchased from club members. Tickets are $15 and include fish, parsley potatoes, slaw, dessert, and water. It will be drive-through only from 4-6 p.m.
The Ruritan Club offers the Eagle Rock Community Center for use by individuals and groups in the Eagle Rock area for a nominal fee to help with utilities. Call 540-884-2775 for reservations.
