The James River golfers had the second lowest score in a Three Rivers District match at the Olde Mill course in Laurel Fork, Va., last week. As usual Floyd County had the best score, shooting 298, but River was next among the seven district schools at 338.

The Knights were led by Mason Gilliland, who shot even par 72. Isaiah Cantrell of Floyd was medalist with a 69. Also scoring for River were Landon Bolling with a 78, Braden Persinger with 90 and Elizabeth Johnson shot a 98. This was the last district match of the regular season and Gilliland and Bolling both earned all-district first team h honors.

On Monday of this week the Knights played Glenvar in a non-district match at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club.

“We created a yearly tradition with Glenvar several years ago and Monday we carried on that tradition,” said River coach Donna Cox. “We played a fun format, where our top six golfers played match play.”

Bolling and Gilliland took on the one and two from Glenvar and handedly took 11 holes from them. Persinger and Johnson took on the three and four spots and were also very successful, winning by seven holes.

“Trenton Taylor and Camden Saunders took on their five and six and while they did not come out on top, they played great and only lost by three holes,” said Cox.

The Knights travel on Thursday to take on Rappahannock at their home course, Hobbs Hole.
