Spring sports teams have scrimmages as season nears

Practices for Virginia High School League spring sports teams began last week and both Lord Botetourt and James River teams are preparing for the season with scrimmages and jamborees.

Action begins on Thursday of this week when the James River and Lord Botetourt girls soccer teams will scrimmage in Daleville. Action really picks up on Saturday with several local teams warming up for their seasons.

At LB the Cavalier baseball team will host a jamboree. Lord Botetourt will open the day with a 9 a.m. scrimmage against Brookville, followed by Brookville and Staunton River at 11 a.m., Staunton River and Rustburg at 1 p.m. and the Cavs and Rustburg will wind things up at 3 p.m.

The Lord Botetourt boys soccer team will participate in a jamboree at Bogle Field in South Roanoke County Saturday. Franklin County and host Cave Spring will play at 9 a.m. followed by LB and Radford at 10 a.m., Franklin County and Radford at 11 a.m. and LB against Cave Spring at 12:40 p.m.

The James River softball team will play in a three-team jamboree at Cave Spring High Saturday. River will play Cave Spring in a battle of Knights at 10 a.m., followed by River and Tazewell at 11:30 a.m. Tazewell and Cave Spring will conclude the day at 1 p.m.

The Lord Botetourt softball team will scrimmage at Brookville at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Next Tuesday is a big day for James River sports. The Knights will host Stuarts Draft in baseball at 5:30 p.m. and Bath County in boys soccer at 6:30 p.m. The softball team is at Craig County for a 4:30 p.m. scrimmage.

A week from today, on March 9, the LB softball team goes to Patrick Henry for a 4:30 p.m. scrimmage, while the baseball team will host Alleghany at 5 p.m. Then, on Thursday, March 10, the LB tennis teams scrimmage Salem with the girls at home and the boys on the Spartan courts. Also on that day the both LB soccer teams will scrimmage with the girls at Hidden Valley and the boys at Blacksburg.

On Friday, March 11, the James River baseball team will go to Heritage and the girls soccer team will host Virginia High.

Official games for the spring season begin the following week.
