The James River golfers are in Giles County today to participate in a “Throwback” match with some of the Knights’ former district rivals. The match will be held at the Castle Rock Golf Club with a 1 p.m. tee off time.
This will be the Knights’ fourth match in the span of nine days. The busy stretch began last Tuesday at the Hobbs Hole course in Tappahannock against Rappahannock High School. The team shot a collective 324 with Mason Gilliland leading the charge with a 72. Landon Bolling was close behind with a 75 and Braden Persinger shot an 82.
Last Thursday, August 13, the Knights hosted a match at the Botetourt Golf & Swim Club. It was a tight match with Radford leading the way at 308. Floyd County was two strokes back at 310 and James River wasn’t far behind at 318. River seniors Bolling and Gilliland both shot two over par 73 and sophomore Persinger shot four over par 75.
“Our top three golfers are having a great year,” said River coach Donna Cox. “We are continuing to work hard at getting a solid fourth score.”
The Knights were back on the links on Monday of this week as they traveled to White Sulphur Springs for a round at the challenging Greenbriar Course. Once again the team was led by Bolling, who scorched the course with a five under par 69 under wet conditions. Gilliland was also impressive on the difficult course, shooting even par 74, and Persinger had a solid third score with an 81.
After today’s match the Knights will take a break, returning to action Thursday, August 27, with match at the Hanging Rock Country Club in Roanoke County.
