The Fincastle Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) recently bestowed a Vietnam Conflict Cross of Military Service to Shields Douglas Compton of Eagle Rock, who served in the U.S. Army.
Compton is the great-great-grandson of Pvt. Archibald Thompson Ward, Co. H, 22nd Virginia Cavalry. He is the recipient of numerous military awards. Many family members and friends attended the ceremony from local areas and out of state. The ceremony was led by UDC President Harriett Francis and Donna DiMurro, Recorder of Military Service, and assisted by other members of the chapter.
