James River boys are runner-up in state 4×800 relay

The James River boys finished ninth and the girls were 25th among 39 schools represented at the Class 2 state track meet last Friday and Saturday at James Madison University in Harrisonburg. The Three Rivers District swept the team titles as the Radford boys and Glenvar girls won state championships.

River’s 4×800 boys relay team ran a time of 8.36 to finish second to Floyd County by less than two seconds. That team was comprised of Jacob Hill, Cayden Shorter, Michael Jorgensen and Nathan Etzler.

The boys had two third place finishes. Alex Eastman took third in the shot put with a heave of 47’3” while Ben Bailey cleared 6’2” to take third in the high jump. Ben was also third in the long jump at 20’ 6.75”.

The top eight scored points and River had two seventh place finishes, Conner Church in the 200 meters and Jorgensen in the 3,200.

For the girls, Holly Hylton took a seventh in the 400 meters and Naveah VanBuren was seventh in the discus.
