The James River baseball team has a non-district home game against Class 5 Patrick Henry today. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Springwood.
The Knights hosted Patrick County in a Three Rivers District game on Tuesday evening but results were too late for publication. River will host Carroll County on Friday in a district game at 7 p.m.
The Knights went 1-2 last week. After beating Liberty Monday, April 13, they played North Cross in Roanoke and lost 17-9.
“We just ran into an offensive buzz saw in this one,” said River coach Chance Henry. “North Cross’ top five guys in their lineup were as good as any I’ve seen in a while. They hit the ball hard to every part of the field and they were hard to pitch to.”
River had a good day at the plate with nine hits. Levi Peck was four-for-five with a double and three runs batted in. Jeremiah Mays and Evan Joyce had two hits each.
“We actually hit the ball pretty well and took our walks,” said Henry. “Any time you score nine runs you should have a good chance to win the game. but man they could really swing it.”
On Friday at home the Knights lost a Three Rivers District game to visiting Floyd County, 7-3. River led 1-0 after three innings but the Buffaloes put up four in the fourth and three in the seventh.
“This was a frustrating one for me because we played parts of the game well and struggled in other areas,” said Henry. “We did fine on the mound, Levi Peck and Evan Joyce competed well and did a good job of keeping us in there. Credit to Floyd, they adjusted to both of them after the first time through the order.”
The Knights had eight hits, including three by Carter Birckhead.
“We just couldn’t string our hits together,” said Henry. “We had a couple guys hit the ball well but we couldn’t put three hits together in a row and Floyd did.”
